A Letter From Our Director
Coach Chris
To the Kidz Love Soccer family,

Hello again!

I have been writing these editorial letters for about 4 years now, and I'm never sure whether or not anyone is reading them. So if you do read this and have a reaction, please feel free to share your ideas and thoughts at the address below. I'll be looking forward to your response.

Well, here we are in the middle of winter; we are caught in the vortex of a California rain storm. The water experts say we are 50% short of what we need for the year and headed for rationing, but all I can see is rain - the clouds seem to have dropped onto my head at about 9 feet above ground! Quite depressing if I let it be. I am choosing not to let it get me down : )

It is hard to imagine Spring soccer with all of the fun in the sun that our children will be experiencing. Especially with the weather being so crummy. There will be Kidz Love Soccer activities for children of all ages (2.5 - 12.9) on a field near you. It will be sunny and warm. The Kidz will need repeated water breaks, sunscreen gooped all over their happy faces, and they'll be hot! Off will come the long pants and jackets of winter, and in their place, shorts and t-shirts will be worn. And the colors... The children will take off the browns, grays, and blacks of winter, and wear the bright neon colors red, orange, and yellow; the glorious colors of spring and summer. I can hardly wait!

In the middle of gray, wet weather, freezing cold conditions, and short days, we must find a way to maintain a positive attitude and outlook. For me, I choose to see the coming Spring as sure as breathing. For myself, I choose to remember what the sun on my skin feels like, how green the grass grows in the Spring, how the flowers bloom while the bees land on them in search of nectar. It's all going to be different.

I think sometimes we can get bogged down in the depressing color of our circumstances. Circumstances are like the weather; ever changeable. Or maybe I should say the weather is like a soccer match. With the ebb and flow of a the match comes success, challenges, success, challenges, and so on. How we face adversity is what matters, and keeping a proper perspective is a HUGE aspect in maintaining an upward looking outlook.

Regardless of how the dank, cold weather makes us feel, spring is still going to arrive. The sap is still going to rise, whether we feel like it or not. It's the same with soccer players and the game. If a player finds themselves underperforming, or feeling less-than because of some other players with greater talent, all they have to do is keep trying; stick around and the sap will rise. The challenge for us is to overcome our circumstances, and we can better do this through keeping a positive mental and spiritual attitude. Instead of constantly belaboring the current state of affairs (or the state of the economy for that matter!), we should force ourselves to remember. Remember all of the wet winters that we've lived before, every one of them eventually turned into warm, splendiferous summers. It's the same with the circumstances of life. Right now the economy is in the dumps and the ceiling of clouds pours down on us from 9 feet above the ground. Acuna Matata! It means, no worries for the rest of your days, a phrase from 'The Lion King.'

I think back to my junior year in college. At the time I was playing soccer for a very small college in the Portland area. I was not recruited for the team, but chose to attend there based on a very well-known coach, and a successful NAIA program. I began as 13th man (not a starter, on the bench) and ended the season as the 3rd leading goal-scorer, even though I was playing limited minutes. Instead of crying in my beer (I don't even like beer; I'm more into a good Valpolicella  myself!) I pulled up my bootstraps and made the most of my limited playing time. For my final year of soccer eligibility, I transferred to Azusa Pacific University, captained our team, and made 1st Team All-tournament Selection to end my college soccer days. When I get down by the circumstances of life, I need to be reminded of how things always ebb and flow, wax and wane, come and go. It's part of the rhythm of life.

This is what I wish and hope for us all: that we would remember in our hearts that the sap will rise, the Monarch butterflies will return, the days will lengthen, and sun will shine again. Let's all just keep a positive attitude as we hang in there. Our Kidz are depending on us to set this example.

Blessings on us all,

Coach Chris Trevisan
