A Letter From Our Director
Coach Chris
Three Decades of Fun
---  So far!

Hello again!

It seems like just yesterday that I was asked to consider offering a soccer program to little kids for the City of Cupertino Parks and Recreation Department. This was in the spring of 1979. It feels strange to be speaking of Kidz Love Soccer in terms of three decades. Once asked, there was no need to ruminate over the decision; I said, "Yes!" immediately. I thought to myself, "How difficult can it be to teach kids something I love so much?" Boy, oh boy, was I in for a surprise.

The first session I taught had an enrollment of eight children; I was terrified. I clearly remember feeling helpless, out of my depth, as the little faces all looked up at me expectantly, dependently, and not just a little apprehensively. I wonder if they sensed my own apprehension? I thought to myself, "Uh oh, now you've stepped in it!" I truly had no idea what I was doing. I didn't know how to speak to a four-year-old, let alone teach them the world's most popular game. I think our first few sessions consisted of a lot of drills, scrimmages, and set pieces, all of which have been since designated age-inappropriate by us experts at Kidz Love Soccer, Inc. for a four-year-old. I remember that we had one ball for all eight children: now there's an optimal approach to applied dynamics in teaching! I can only imagine what torture it must have been for those few kids in the early days.

Today, every player plays with their own ball at their feet, and our curriculum of 150+ fun games has been fully integrated into a KLS age specific activity. How things have changed in three decades.

I have heard it said, "The only constant is change." This is not completely true, and for that I am eternally grateful. We all need some things in life to be stable - it's how we maintain our bearings in this life. Under the microscope of close scrutiny, much of what was (in KLS) remains. For example, in the faces of children, those hopeful expressions, their shiny, shared exuberance, remains ever unchanged and joyful. The affect of sweet children on their care-giving adults is undeniable, universal. I remember looking into those upturned faces for the first time and the effect they had on me: all at once I encountered faith for the first time. Those children believed in me and waited for me to pour meaning into each moment. There was so much trust in their eyes on that first day, and the weight of that responsibility has stayed with me ever since. Anyone who tells you that coaching soccer is all about fun, hasn't discovered the transcendence that embodies the human experience in youth sports. Children demand the best from each of us and deserve nothing less. To anyone aspiring to become a teacher, coach, or parent, I would implore him or her to approach their particular role soberly and selflessly. Anything short of that will fall short of a child's need.

Much has changed in three decades. We now reach out to 130+ communities in two states, as opposed to just one. We have a fully integrated web site that reaches out to 50,000+ current participants and inward to our 200+ employees, as opposed to hand-written registration cards, with carbon copies attached. Yes, we are thankful for the digitization of our business process, which characterizes our communication age, and we couldn't exist in our current form without a cyber infrastructure. Our integrated system allows all of our coaches to teach from the same philosophy and curriculum, albeit the style varies from personality to personality. I am proud to say that our never-ending search for true coaching talent has lead us to the many wonderful men and women that work with our children on KLS fields everywhere.

While the delivery method and portals may have changed through the years, the human element remains constant. In the final analysis, Kidz Love Soccer is about human beings: young soccer enthusiasts, their parents, coaches, administrators, and community centers. It has been the most invigorating and rewarding aspect of our three decades, and most of all to know the beautiful children and families of KLS. Although some components of our work have changed with the times, the children have always been and always will represent our true north. Like a compass pointing the way, the faith they place in us continues to drive us on to excellence. And even though a flawless program remains elusive, we don't stop trying to attain it. We want what's best for the children, and I'm quite certain that the love we hold for these Kidz is quite literally what sets us apart from the rest. This is what captured my heart in 1979 and what will, I'm sure, continue to distinguish Kidz Love Soccer for another three decades.
Kidz!  Love!  Soccer!

--- And KLS loves Kidz. Really.

Sincerely,

Coach Chris Trevisan
